How Do I Know If My Roof Needs Repairs?
Did you know that the average roof shingle lasts between 15-25 years? If you think it might be time to get your roof checked, we're happy to come over and give you a free estimate. However, here are a few symptoms you may notice ahead of time while conducting a self-inspection of your roof.
Algae Growth – This is caused by air-borne algae collecting on your roof over time. It causes discoloration on your roof that is black to brown in color and is often mistaken as a dirty roof. |
Blistering – Blistering is caused by moisture getting into one of the layers of your shingles. It a sign that your shingles are breaking down or essentially rotting from the inside out. Eventually, blistering on the surface of your shingles will turn into larger areas of decay. |
Buckling – If your shingles look risen or as if something is underneath them, they are buckling. There are many causes for buckling including wrinkled underlayment, improperly installed felt/tar paper, or poor roof ventilation. |
Ceiling Spots – Ceiling spots are typically caused by a leaky roof. Leaks can normally be fixed by a quick roof repair, but if you notice a colony of ceiling spots, it's definitely time for a new roof! |
Curling – When your singles begin to curl, it is a sign they are at the end of their life. Curling is a good indicator that it is time to replace a roof. If your roof has recently been installed, it is more than likely a manufacturer defect. |
Damaged Flashing – Flashing keeps your roof from leaking when you have a chimney, skylight, or vent pipe. Overtime, flashing can become worn out and corroded. If your flashing doesn't look right, be sure to have it inspected before it causes more costly damage. |
Missing Granules – If you are finding your gutters filled with an unwarranted amount of granules, it is a sign that your roof is close to the end of its life. Overtime, asphalt dries out and granules are dislodged. Without granules, a roof will rapidly break down because it is no longer being protected from the UV rays. If left untouched in this condition, a roof will start to leak or can even blow off during a rainstorm. |
Missing Shingles – You may notice missing shingles after bad weather or windy conditions, but missing shingles can also be a sign that your roof was improperly installed or is getting old. |
Rotting – Rotting occurs when moisture is absorbed by the mat within the core of a shingle. This is a problem frequently seen with organic-based shingles. |
